The Annex Singers of Toronto

For the last twenty years, The Annex Singers of Toronto has flourished with Artistic Director Maria Case. Now approaching its 50th anniversary in central Toronto, this vibrant 65-voice auditioned choir offers three concerts a year featuring both major and lesser-known works from the classical Western choral repertoire.

Under Maria’s leadership, the choir features fresh, inventive programs of an eclectic pieces, from plainchant to jazz, often including Case’s own choral compositions. Many programs feature an environmental or activist theme, using modern and ancient texts to offer thoughtful, uplifting reflections on contemporary issues. As Artistic Director, Maria has led the choir in the creation of a number of innovative choral dramas, weaving together choral music and selected texts to tell compelling stories. This has included 2016’s December Diaries, a journey across a frozen landscape in song and snippets of historical texts, and in 2021, What Will Remain, featuring poems and music on a Remembrance theme.

The choir demonstrates its ongoing celebration of Canadian music with performances and premieres of works from composers across the country. Recently, this included the premiere of Frank Horwath’s stirring defense of the environment, I Am Ice.

The Annex Singers is accompanied by the talented pianist Anne Lee and enjoys collaborations with a wide array of guest artists and ensembles.
